The program of underwater discovery, called Snorkeling Over the Past, is a regular part of the Center's program. Students are introduced to snorkeling and explore bits of the past that help to put into context where we are, both physically and historically. For an example we explore a Cycladic period (c. 4000 BC) quarry and foundation in shallow water between Paros and neighboring Antiparos.
A visit to a very important temple site (above) where excavations are currently underway is one of the above-water portions of the program.
Peter Nicolaides leads the program. He is a highly accomplished underwater archaeologist, marine biologist and marine ecologists. Peter worked with Jacques Cousteau and operates the Aegean Institute and the Aegean Diving College on Paros.
One highlight of the Aegean Center Vocal Ensemble's performance is, "O Son Zeis"
The piece is arranged by our gifted teacher of vocal music, Orfeas John Munsey, to words and music of the ancient Greek "Seikilos" epitaph
Euphrosyne Doxiadis, artist, renowned art historian, scholar, author, has been teaching with us for almost five years-in spite of her very busy schedule.
Donovan performed opening night of Gyp Mills sculpture exhibit, July 19th, 2003, and has returned to the Center twice since that time. In the top photo, from left to right, is John Pack (Aegean Center Director), Gyp Mills (Gypsy Dave in Donovan's songs), and Donovan. In the left photo below is Donovan practicing withGreek-Norwegian, Olaf Dimities, a wonderful violinist.
