We have the very good fortune to be offering a new class taught by a most extraordinary teacher, Vida DuPlesses.
More than 2000 years ago the Oracle at Delphi advised human beings to, "Know Thyself." How many of us can truly say that we know who we are in the scheme of things? How often do we react out of our fears and insecurities instead of responding from an integrated whole? Who and what is your 'self' ? The realization of this is what the hero's journey is all about and Greek mythology offers an astounding wealth of wisdom into many of the subtle aspects required to accomplish initiation, growth, and the metamorphosis of innocence into consciousness. The symbolic language of myth is archetypal and thus as relevant today as it was in the ancient world.
In addition to discussions on mythology, this course also includes simple and playful exercises involving movement, mime and interactive improvisation. Using the myths and legends as themes, as well as other archetypal symbols and modern-day settings, the exercises are designed to expand awareness of ourselves and others in order to bring more consciousness into what and how we feel, say, think and do; into how our outer and inner worlds reflect each other; towards possibly more effective and meaningful self-expression in our lives. All that is required here is the interest to explore and the willingness to use your imagination creatively and sufficient enthusiasm to play along.
As human beings we are all on the hero's journey, women as well as men, with our own individual trials and triumphs, our own Dragons to confront, to fight or tame. It helps when we are able to identify their significance within a context, and then to equip ourselves to deal with them effectively and make a constructive contribution to the whole of humanity.
